A Note from the St. Paul Police

How do I know if it's a crime?
If it feels wrong, it probably is.

Sometimes, we get calls from downtown residents who want to report that something happened that just "didn't feel right." No obvious crime was committed, but something seemed off - a strange car in the neighborhood, people loitering on the block, someone asking for money.

Any one of these things can be innocent - or maybe not. If you're unsure, trust your instinct and call the police. As a resident, you serve as the SPPD's eyes and ears within our community. Your calls help them to identify trends, track suspicious activities and, in many cases, lead to arrests. The Saint Paul Police Department offers these tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Be familiar with who is coming and going - who belongs and who doesn't.
  • Check I.D.s when repair people, salespeople, meter readers, etc., come to the door. Don't hesitate to call and check them out or refuse them admittance if something feels wrong.
  • Get good descriptions of people and cars and, whenever possible, get license plate numbers.
  • Again, trust your instincts. Don't hesitate to remove yourself from the situation. Forget the rules of etiquette and social norms. Be willing to make a scene if necessary.
  • Call the police. Use 911 for emergencies or the DOWNTOWN PAGER number 651-229-1994 for non-emergencies.

Remember to keep us informed, as well. We track issues in our area so that we can follow-up with the police and work on your behalf to make sure the appropriate actions are taken.
